About Sarah
Digerati of The Electro Wild, Wild Web
Sarah has covered entertainment for newspapers, magazines and websites since the ‘90s. She entered the field of web publishing when cyberspace was still a sort of Digital Wild West rife with opportunities and struggling for its place as a legitimate medium for valuable and credible content. Internet Radio and the P-to-P Extravaganza Through a series of now-defunct— or revised— online music outlets Sarah tapped into an incredible variety of music, including an Internet radio station that played original recordings of flamenco artists living and working in Valencia, Spain. Also within click distance where stations that introduced to her to classic tango artists such as Carlos Gardel and Ástor Piazzolla. Presently Sarah programs the flamenco, tango, and boleros stations at Batanga.com. Also surfacing along the way were rock en español artists such as Soda Stereo, Caifanes, Heroes Del Silencio; troubadours Joaquin Sabina and Charly Garcia; and Brazilian greats Gilberto Gil, and Caetano Veloso, who instantly entered regular rotation on Sarah's CD player. Rewind Sarah learned to work a turntable as soon as she could reach high enough drop the stylus on a 45 vinyl. Real old school. During the post-punk scene in Minneapolis in the ’80s, she jammed electric while attending college on a music scholarship and working part-time at a record distribution company. She studied clarinet, jazz saxophone, and guitar styles such as flamenco, samba, bossa nova, jazz, rock, folk, and African styles such as soukous and juju. The New Milennium y Batanga.com When she joined Batanga.com in the summer of 2000, the world of Latin music was wide open for delirious discovery. Since her arrival she has been introduced to the electro-Tango of Bajo Fando Tango Club, Gotan Project, Tanghetto, and bands like Acida that blend tango with rock. Hungry for more knowledge, she began graduate studies where she studied the intersections of literature, and music and film history. Exploring the historical paths of music that connect cultures, then bump and shift into new and exciting musical styles drives her musical discoveries. Tradition with a Twist Updated traditional styles and the surfacing of unlikely fusions such as the flamenco-rock-hip-hop of Ojos De Brujo, the flamenco chill of Spain’s Chambao, and Brazilian artist CéU’s all-encompassing compositions, and the ongoing discovery of eclectic voices such as Bunbury and Ely Guerra, continue to fuel her passion for music. Sarah aspires to travel to São Paulo, Brazil, a city known for its diverse cultures which contribute to a rich musical melting pot. |
