Si no votas, no existes. Punto.

Posiblemente la mayoría de ustedes coincida conmigo en que en estos momentos, Estados Unidos no es exactamente el país más querido del mundo. Sin importar si somos Demócratas, Republicanos, Independientes o si simplemente creemos que todos los partidos políticos son la misma cosa; es necesario aceptar que mientras vivamos dentro de sus fronteras, de alguna manera somos todos responsables de su “fama“, o imagen.

¿Cuántas veces han escuchado a gente hacer comentarios como: “los franceses son insoportables”, o “los argentinos son engreídos” o, “los brasileños son alegres”? Pues de alguna manera, sea cierto o no, son “etiquetas” que un pueblo puede adquirir casi sin querer, y que luego terminan identificándolo para siempre.

A nivel de gobiernos puede suceder lo mismo. ¿Has oído alguna vez aquella frase que dice: “Cada pueblo tiene el gobierno que se merece”? Pues yo creo que es muy cierto. Todos tendemos a criticar lo que sucede aquí y/o en nuestros países de origen, como si fuésemos meros espectadores de una película que no podemos cambiar. Sin embargo, y salvo en casos específicos, todos tenemos la posibilidad de elegir a quien nos gobierne, y ayudar a que esa “fama” o imagen, sea la que verdaderamente queramos reflejar en el mundo.

Ahora bien ¿Levanten la mano los ciudadanos americanos de origen latino que se encuentran allí frente a sus computadoras leyendo este artículo, y que NO HAN VOTADO NUNCA, o no piensan hacerlo en estas elecciones, o simplemente ni siquiera se han molestado en inscribirse? Tal como lo sospechaba… ¿Miles verdad?

Desde luego que no es en todos los casos, pero muchos de nuestros países de origen (o los de nuestros padres), están como están hoy, por decenas de gobiernos “mal elegidos” que, o no hicieron las cosas bien ya sea por ignorancia, o porque robaron, o porque simplemente no les importó y permitieron que sus países cayeran en picada hacia el abismo. Sea cual fuere el motivo especifico, les aseguro que fueron simplemente, gobiernos mal elegidos…

Cada uno de nosotros como ciudadanos, somos miembros de esta gigantesca familia. Los Estados Unidos es como nuestra casa, y el mundo nuestro barrio. Ayudemos a que esta familia sea querida y respetada, y que aquella etiqueta que nos identifique, sea un reflejo de lo que todos deseamos para este país que tanto amamos.

No dejes que otros decidan por ti, porque si no votas…no existes. ¡Punto!

If you don’t vote, you don’t exist. Period.

The majority of you would probable agree with me on this: right now the United States isn’t the most likable country in the world. Whether we are Democrats, Republicans, or Independents, or even if we think all parties are the same thing, it’s necessary to acknowledge that as long as we live in this country, in one way or another we are responsible for this country’s reputation or image.

How many times have you heard someone say things like, “French people are unbearable” or “Argentineans are conceited” or “Brazilians are happy”? Truth or fiction, they are “labels” that a country or town can acquire involuntarily and that end up reflecting who they are forever.

The same is true at the government level. Have you ever heard the phrase “Every town has the government it deserves”? I believe that’s true. We all tend to criticize what happens here and/or in our countries of origin, as if we were nothing but spectators of a movie that we can’t change. However, we all have the chance to choose (except in some specific cases) who we want to govern us and help create that reputation or image that we actually want the world to see.

Now, raise your hand all of you American citizens of Latin origin who are there, in front of your computers reading this article and who HAVE NEVER VOTED BEFORE or who aren’t thinking about doing it during the upcoming elections, or who simply haven’t bother to register to vote. Just like I thought… Thousands, right?

Of course, this isn’t true in every case, but many of our countries of origin (or our parents’) are the way they are today because of dozens of governments “chosen poorly” that either didn’t do things right because of ignorance, or because they stole, or simply because they didn’t care and allowed their countries to go into ruins. Whatever the specific reason, I assure you that they were simply poorly-chosen governments.

Every one of us, as citizens, is a member of this large family. The United States is our home and the world our neighborhood. Let’s help our family be loved and respected and let the label that represent us be a mirror of what we want for this country we love so much.

Don’t let others decide for you, because if you don’t vote… you don’t exist. Period!
